The CRM Cancer Disease, Coding, and Staging course defines cancer and how it develops and spreads. Students will learn about the many types of cancer and how to classify these tumors utilizing globally recognized codes.This course offers instruction for using the many references to assign codes for the topography, morphology and extent of disease. Students will become familiar with the principles of abstracting coded cancer information.

 

Two major staging systems will be reviewed extensively, the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) TNM Stage and Collaborative Stage. An overview of historical staging systems, such as the SEER Summary Staging and Extent of Disease (EOD) staging systems will be included as a reference for students.

    CRM is a self-paced program, designed for those interested in entering the cancer registry profession. Cancer Registrars possess the clinical and technical knowledge and skills necessary to maintain components of the disease-related data collection systems consistent with medical, administrative, ethical, legal, and accreditation requirements of the health care delivery system. In all types of facilities, and in various locations within a facility, cancer registrars manage and analyze clinical cancer information for the purpose of processing, maintaining, compiling and reporting health information for research, quality management/improvement, facility planning and marketing, monitoring patient outcomes, cancer program development, cancer prevention and surveillance, survival data, compliance of reporting standards, evaluation of the results of treatment, and national accreditation standards.
