The purpose of this course is to provide the student with the basic principles of the ICD-10-CM Coding and Classification System, including the sequencing of codes and the impact on reimbursement.

Course Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Apply  ICD-10-CM iagnosis codes to case scenarios
  • Follow departmental coding policies and procedures
  • Code diagnoses for data collection and processing
  • Follow Coding Clinic for ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS advice for sequencing of diagnoses published by the American Hospital Association (AHA)
  • Apply definitions and guidelines to determine the principal diagnosis
  • Use clinical information regarding various disease processes to assign codes correctly to these conditions
  • Use standard reference materials used by coding professionals
  • Demonstrate experience in coding scenarios for inpatient and outpatient cases
  • Apply knowledge of coding principles by assigning accurate and precise codes to diagnoses that pertain to all body systems
  • Apply the official coding guidelines for inpatient coding
  • Apply the official coding guidelines for outpatient coding

Note: Course enrollment includes one attempt to take the Final Exam. You must get a score of 70% or higher on the final to earn your CEUs and Certificate of Completion for the course. However, you will be able to continue on to the Course Evaluation or go back and review any of the previous content after taking the Final Exam regardless of score. Your score on the Final Exam composes 100% of the score shown on your transcript for the course.
