Professional Coding Practice

Online Education Courses

This course offers students the ability to practice coding in real-world professional coding scenarios. Students step through more than six different settings to complete 101 online coding exercises using either codebooks or the 3M Encoder.

The link to the 3M Encoder and log-in instructions are located in the Course Resources.

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

Correctly code basic healthcare cases.
Understand how to apply coding guidelines in a variety of different healthcare settings.
Apply lessons learned from project work to on-the-job situations.

Medical Dictionary

We suggest that students without much experience or expertise in the healthcare field may benefit from purchasing a medical dictionary, such as Dorland's Medical Dictionary. This book is not required, and no material will be assigned in this book. Even though this medical dictionary is listed as optional, it is highly suggested that all coding professionals—or anyone studying coding—should have access to a medical dictionary.

Dorland's Illustrated Medical Dictionary, 32nd, Dorland
ISBN:  9781416062578

Note: Each lesson provides coding activities and practice questions to be completed within the course. No grade is recorded for these "Check Your Understanding" resources. There is a Final Exam at the end of the course that you must complete with a score of 70% or higher to earn a successful course completion. You are only allowed to take the Final Exam once. Your score on the Final Exam composes 100% of the score shown on your course transcript.
